European researchers have published a new study suggesting it’s perfectly normal for people to just…blank out.

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicate that the brain does not produce a constant stream of thought when you’re awake.

Researchers also found that during mind-blanking, the brain acts in ways typically associated with deep sleep.

“Mind blanking is a relatively new mental state within the study of spontaneous cognition,” Dr. Athena Demertzi said. Perhaps the lines between the waking world and the dream world are not so clear!
